Diabetes Research Laboratory was established in 2021 at the Physiology Research Center of Semnan University of Medical Sciences by Dr. Habib Yaribeygi, assistant professor of physiology.

In this laboratory, research on diabetes and pathophysiology of diabetic complications including cognitive problems, diabetic nephropathy, and the efficiency of liver and pancreas tissues in a diabetic environment is studied. Also, the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of new antidiabetic drugs including SGLT2 inhibitors and Glp-1 analogs and the role of these drugs on the mentioned complications in human and animal models are investigated. In addition, one of the goals of this research laboratory is to create diabetic animal models in rats using a diet containing high sucrose. Considering that consumption of high-carbohydrate diet is one of the main risk factors in the occurrence of diabetes in humans, in this laboratory, it is tried to introduce new treatment methods to reduce or prevent the occurrence of insulin resistance and the occurrence of diabetes in humans.

Currently, several research projects in the form of independent projects or student theses are being implemented in this center. Some of the ongoing or completed projects are:

 

1. The effects of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor sitagliptin on cognitive function and spatial memory in the experimental model of diabetes mellitus

2. Effects of empagliflozin on oxidative stress and kidney tissue efficiency in STZ-induced diabetic animals

3. The effects of empagliflozin on the efficiency of the pancreas and the incidence of diabetes and metabolic disorders caused by high-sucrose food in laboratory rats

4. Investigating the effects of empagliflozin on oxidative indices and kidney function in an animal model of diabetes caused by a high-sucrose diet

5. Effects of Dipeptidyl Peptidase-4 Enzyme Inhibitors on Metabolic and Memory Profiles and Learning and Memory Functions in Laboratory Rats Fed a High Sucrose Diet

6. Effects of Linagliptin on brain insulin signaling and cognitive functions in laboratory rats fed a high-sucrose diet.

7. The effectiveness of empagliflozin on metabolic factors and liver enzymes in type 2 diabetic patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver, a double-blind randomized clinical trial study

8. The effect of sitagliptin on metabolic profile, inflammatory profile, cognitive activities and pancreatic functions in type 2 diabetic patients, a double-blind randomized clinical trial study

9. Investigating the effectiveness of sitagliptin on metabolic factors and liver function tests in type 2 diabetic patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, a double-blind randomized clinical trial study

10. Effects of SGLT2 inhibitor empagliflozin on cognitive disorders of diabetic rats
